River Rising by John A. Heldt is a historical fiction/fantasy novel set in 1888/89 and today. It follows the adventures of a time traveling family, who end up in the wrong place at the right time, as they attempt to find lost love ones and return to the present day.
Adam Carson, along with his siblings: Greg, Natalie, Cody and Caitlin, are devastated when their parents fail to return from a hiking trip. As time goes by, they are presumed dead. Then they find out the most unbelievable thing, their parents are time travelers.
If you are a time traveler you should be able to return like nothing happened. Right? Turns out it is much more complicated than that. Lots of things could have gone wrong that prevented their return. Therefore, the five siblings decide to follow their parents to the past and bring them home. So begins an adventure of a life time.
This is not the first book I have read by Mr. Heldt. What I love most about his writing is the historical accuracy. He did not disappoint me here. I also loved the characters in this book. They were perfectly imperfect. This allowed me to empathize with them easily.
The only negative thing I have, and it is minor, the pace of the book was slow in some spots. I have seen a documentary on the flood of Johnstown so I knew what was coming. Knowing what was coming helped me get by the slower parts.
I recommend this book for those who like historically accurate and/or time travel stories. A note of warning, this book ends in a cliff hanger. Proceed with caution; because, you will want to read the next book immediately. It has left me in a pickle since I want to read the next one, but I have other requests in the que waiting.
While I used my Kindle Unlimited to obtain a copy of River Rising, the author did request a review.
