What drew me to this book, from among the choices available, is the idea that this young women, Grace, is having an affair with a married man and waiting for him to leave his wife. I could just see all the possibilities in my head and I knew this was not going to turn out well. Therefore, before I even started reading I wanted to shake some sense into her. So needless to say, I hooked before I even opened the book to read the first page.

Well, I was right, things were not what they seemed in Grace’s world. When her lover, David, becomes the media darling for saving a pregnant women’s life in Paris, their years of careful secrecy are laid open for the world to see. The fallout of this event forces Grace to look at her life in a new light and she is shattered.

The man she thought she knew so well does not really exist. She has put him on a pedestal and now that pedestal has fallen over and left her only the broken truth. It is a fortunate thing for Grace that she has a couple of allies on her side. With their help she will have to remake her business, herself and her life.

This is a wonderful debut novel for the author. She obviously wrote this story with a lot of empathy. She made a character that you could not help but like even though there were times you want to shake her to make her see the truth of the situation she has created for herself. It is obvious to everyone, except Grace, that “DISASTER” is written all over this affair.

The plot moved along nicely and there were surprises along the way to keep me interested. The only negative for me was the ending. I think she recovered from the affair much faster than is possible. I do not want to give anything away here, but I will say that Grace needed longer to mourn her loses.

This would make a great beach read. I also recommend this as a book club choice. There are lots of topics that would make for great discussion.

My Five Sisters by Pam Franklin

My Five Sisters by Pam Franklin is one of those rare books you will think about long after the reading is over.  I found myself caught up in the story; yet, there were times I wanted to put it down because of how distressing the subject matter was.

The book is based on the true life experiences of the author and her childhood growing up in a home in which she was abused and tortured by her sister. Her sister suffered from Multiple Personal Disorder (MPD) and one of these personalities, the author calls Angry, beat and threatened to kill her repeated while they were growing up.  Continue reading “My Five Sisters by Pam Franklin”

The Book of M by Peng Shepherd

The Book of M, by Peng Shepherd, is a quirky, out-there, grab you by-the-pants debut novel. I think it will be one of those books that will leave readers thinking long after the last page has been turned. I predict some will be so-so about it and some will love it. Personally, I fall into the former and I will explain why later.

Sometime in the near future it will happen. People will start to lose their shadows and with it they slowly lose their memories. With the loss of memories comes the ability to perform a deadly and dangerous magic. It starts slowly with one man in India and as it spreads across the globe whole societies began to collapse. I have always associated The City of Lost Fortunes with Las Vegas. Not anymore. Bryan Camp has forever changed that for me. His debut novel is packed with magic, the supernatural and occult of New Orleans and all of these other worldly elements come together to effect the fortunes of the characters in the most unanticipated ways.

Greatest Enemy by Jason Kasper is book one of the David Rivers series and an explosive way to start. It is a roller coaster ride, full of action and suspense, that will you have rushing to the end.

David Rivers is adrift in life and suffering from PTSD from tours in Afghanistan and Iraq as an Army Ranger. Since his release from the military, he has become an alcoholic with suicidal tendencies and is in desperate need of an intervention. He gets one of sorts, just not in the form he truly needs. He is recruited to join a team of mercenaries because of his experience in BASE jumping. Just the thing an adrenaline junkie needs to stave off the suicide thoughts. The Philosopher’s Flight by Tom Miller is an alternate history/fantasy work set in the early 20th century. It is a stunning debut novel and appears to be the first book in a series.

In this alternative history, Philosophy, or Empirical Philosophy as it is better known as, is a relatively new branch of science. Those people, mainly women, who are born with this innate ability can move or shape energy to transport people hundreds of miles, send messages instantly across thousands of miles, and fly, among other things, by drawing a sigil. The Resurrection of Joan Ashby by Cherise Wolas

After reading reviews of The Resurrection of Joan Ashby by Cherise Wolas, I was so excited to get an ARC. Once I started reading that excitement turned to disappointment. I found it verbose and agonizing slow. It actually took me three tries before I could finish.

Joan Ashby is a young and up-and-coming writer. Her first two books, collections of short stories, have already secured her a place in the literary world. She is working on her first novel and is excepting to become the next great American novelist. She has sworn off relationships, love and marriage as well as vowed to never have children in order to focus on her writing. That is until she meets Martin and falls in love. The Tethered Mage is the debut novel of Melissa Caruso and is the first book in the Swords and Fire trilogy. This book is truly a great way to start a new series. The author has built a wonderful magical world full of intrigue and characters to die for.

Therefore, when she inadvertently binds a young fire warlock to herself while trying to aid her it goes against all convention. Tobacco Sun by Lorna Hollifield

Holy Smokes! Tobacco Sun by Lorna Hollifield has got to be one of the best written books I have had the pleasure to read this year.  It was so good, when I finished reading I had to sit there and let it simmer for a bit. The story is told from three POVs, Sydra the younger sister and Hollywood Star, Jimmi-Lyn the scarred older sister, and Vanse the lifelong friend of both. As each reflects on events during their life, the author is able to slowly and painstakingly paint a picture of the results of these experiences.

Sydra left for Hollywood just before graduating from high school with no intention of ever returning. That is until her mother dies and she is drawn back to the last place she ever expected to see again. She is there less than two days and she has already seduced Vanse and killed her father. The story opens as Annie, at the age of fifteen, finally reaches a breaking point and turns her mother into the police. She tells the detective what happens in her home. What her mother does. She gives him a bloody piece of clothing and a teddy bear. She is scared. As promised, they come in the middle of the night and arrest her mother. She is given a new name, Milly, and a great foster family. They tell her how lucky she is to have a foster father like Mike, who is a psychologist.
