Son of a Gun by Lee Ness

When I was asked to review Son of a Gun, by Lee Ness, it was pitched to me as in the vain of the Jason Bourne books by Robert Ludlum. Since I loved that series, I was stoked to read this book and I was not disappointed. There was lots of action, plot twists, and characters to love and some to hate.

John King is a nobody, he does not exist and he likes it like that. In the world of espionage, he operates within, he is known simply as Eidolon, an apparition, and he is the best.  As an assassin for hire he uses this to his utmost advantage. He works alone, stays in the shadows and even his face is not known. 

Eidolon has made many enemies along the way and now someone wants him dead and is willing to pay ten million dollars to the person that is able to find and kill him. He is left with no other choice but to track down the person responsible for the contract on him. To do this he will have to depend on others for help. He is now in very unfamiliar territory and he must adapt quickly or die.

Fantastic, fast paced, spy thriller. I can honestly say I was never bored. The action kept me turning the pages and the plot was well thought out. It was obvious that the author was knowledgeable on weapons, warfare and military tactics. This lent more credibility to the plot.

I also liked the character of John King, even though I felt some guilt in liking a character that kills people for a living. There were no cliff hangers, which I loved. That said, I could easily see where this could be a series. There were other characters in the book that I felt had a story to tell. Therefore, I am hoping to get their stories in the future.

The story was so good I almost hate to bring up the stuff I was not happy with. First, there were numerous grammatical errors and I found this rather distracting. A once over by a good editor would have caught a lot of these. Second, while the weapons and tactics got a lot of attention, the place descriptions where lacking. For these reasons my rating is four stars.

If you love fast paced action or spy thrillers this is the book for you. Note, it is an adult book because of the strong language and some scenes readers may find disturbing.
